How we dig up hidden gem mobile games

May 28, 2026 · Marta Nowak

App store charts are a starting point and nothing more. They surface what's trending or well-marketed, which isn't the same as what's worth your evening. Some of my favorite games this year never cracked a top list.

A lot of our finds come from reader tips and from just scrolling past the first page of search results. Hollowmere Trail is a good example — a quiet hand-drawn adventure that almost nobody was talking about, and it turned out to be one of the most atmospheric things I played.

When I try an unknown game I give it a fair shot: one proper session, not thirty seconds. Many good games have a slow or ugly first ten minutes. I also check how it feels offline and whether it respects my attention.

If you want to help us find the next one, send it in. We read every suggestion, even when we can't get to them all. The best tips come from people who already love a game and want more folks to see it.
