Why touch controls make or break mobile strategy
Strategy is the genre where mobile controls get tested hardest. You're often selecting multiple units, issuing orders fast, and reading a cluttered screen. Get the input wrong and even a great design feels miserable.
The games that work give you forgiving selection — a drag box that's generous, orders that don't misfire when your thumb is a pixel off. Tideline Command does this well, and it even adds a slow-motion planning mode for the hectic moments, which is a lifesaver on a small screen.
Screen size is the honest truth nobody likes to mention. A lot of strategy games that feel cramped on a phone open right up on a tablet. If you're serious about the genre, the bigger screen is worth it.
My tip when trying a new strategy title: play one chaotic battle before you judge it. Calm tutorial fights hide control problems. The messy mid-game is where you find out if the input holds up.
